Traffic between Kuta and Canggu is worse than any map estimates, so budget double at sunset. Roads north of Ubud are narrow but empty, and genuinely the best drive on the island.
Fuel stations thin out past Singaraja, so fill up before you head to the waterfalls. And if the idea of a scooter-heavy roundabout at rush hour makes you tense, take a driver for the first day and self-drive after.
